August 2026 – Weanling Ready: Worth Their Weight in Gold

Lively, interactive sessions on the nights were compered by our own Eilish Gill (SPARC Project Officer) with a local vet on the speaker panel each night. Speakers included AHI Programme Managers Natascha Meunier and Michelle McGrath, as well as local veterinary practitioners John Gilmore (Emlagh Lodge Veterinary), Conor Quinn (Kinnegad Veterinary), Sean O’Sullivan (Castle Vets) and Eoghan Hussey (Summerhill Vets Ennis).

Practical, simple advice regarding topics such as Pneumonia Prevention, Parasite Control, weaning practicalities were the forefront of these events. An opportunity for farmers to ask questions to our panel of experts. The events also featured a “Guess the Weight” competition which provided a practical example of why calibrating your dosing guns is so important.

With the support of AIB and the marts we also had a guest speaker from AIB to talk us through their offerings. Each Mart Manager also gave insight as to what they are seeing trade wise and the future of weanling calves.

Stress in calves causes a drop in immunity – minimise stress in calves with good weaning management

• Slow gradual weaning, using antisuckers or removing cows slowly
• Don’t overwhelm the calf – weaning, vaccinating, debudding – do these at separate times
• Ensure they are eating meal before and after weaning

Pneumonia vaccinations boost immunity in calves and should be done before weaning to provide protection – With many vaccinations on the market it’s best to devise a plan with your vet.

Parasite Control can be an everchanging situation on your farm – be prepared, take regular FEC samples, watch for coughing and keep a close eye. Remember Lungworm doesn’t appear in FEC samples.

Correct calibration of the dosing gun ensures maximum efficiency and avoids over and under dosing.

Take the time now to look at your sheds

– Check there is adequate ventilation without draughts. If the shed smells of ammonia look at the airflow, inlets and outlets.

– Clean and disinfect the shed, allowing it to dry out between seasons. Ensure bedding areas drain well, stay dry and have sufficient straw for young calves to nest in to keep warm.
